Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today I sit down with Dianne Leman to discuss her brand new book We're Pregnant! How to Receive God's Cure for Infertility.

Here's the ground we cover in today's conversation:

  • First off Di, tell us a bit of the Dianne Leman origin story. I’d love to hear more about your family background, how you and Happy met, and when it was that your first encountered Jesus. (00:38 - 16:45)
  • You grew up in a church environment that didn’t believe in miracles. How did people react when you miraculously became pregnant? (16:46 - 19:04)
  • How did you begin ministering to others struggling with infertility as you were now starting to have your own children? (19:05 - 23:20)
  • People struggling with infertility experience a lot of discouragement. What sorts of truths would you share with them to build their faith and help them to begin moving towards a place where they believe change and healing is actually possible? (23:21 - 30:26)
  • Part two of the book helps build the reader’s faith and part three gives them some concrete action steps of praying, believing, partnering, and never giving up. Talk to us about those. (30:27 - 36:56)
  • What do you hope the reader takes away from your book, both those who are struggling with infertility and those who and ministering in this area? (36:57 - 39:38)
  • Di, if the listeners want to find out more about you and about your brand new book, where should they go on the web? (39:39 - 40:51)

About the Book:  If you have longed to shout, “We’re pregnant!” but have lost hope of ever doing so, this book will restore your hope. Dianne Leman shares her own story of receiving God’s cure for her hopeless infertility after she and her husband exhausted all their natural and medical options. Now the mother of five, grandmother of 16, and pastor to thousands, Dianne discovered how much God wants to cure infertility in every couple. This book is for you, whether you know God or not—you might have no faith at all, a weak or wavering faith, or a deep and abiding faith in God. His love and healing are not bound by our faith or worldview—thank God, literally! Hundreds of couples from all over the world have implemented the lessons outlined in this book. They have received answers to their dilemmas of: "It’s impossible for us to get pregnant. There is nothing medically wrong, but we still can’t conceive. We don’t even know if we even believe in God or how to pray! We don’t know what else to do." Hundreds have had hope restored and have received God’s cure for infertility and the gift of children. You will be encouraged as you read the stories of others and learn how you can apply the same lessons to receive God’s cure for infertility. You, too, may soon be singing, “We’re pregnant!”

About the Author:  Dianne Leman married her University of Illinois sweetheart, Happy, and together they dreamed of successful careers in finance and education and of raising a large family. However, Dianne had a devastating struggle with infertility and a dire diagnosis of no hope, no children. Their hopelessness gave way to a surprise encounter with a miracle-working God, and after seven years of marriage, they became pregnant with their first son. This so revolutionized their lives that they started a small gathering in their home that eventually became a church, The Vineyard Church of Central Illinois, in Urbana, Illinois. Together Dianne and Happy lead this church of over 3,000 people. A graduate of the University of Illinois , Vineyard Leadership Institute and Vineyard Bible Institute, Dianne serves on the National Executive Board for the Vineyard Churches of America. She also leads the national teams for Women in Leadership and Spiritual Renewal. In her free time, Dianne loves reading books, walking with her husband, swimming in her pool, and playing with her many grandchildren.

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today I sit down with writer and reporter David Sax to talk about his insightful book The Revenge of Analog: Real Things and Why They Matter (PublicAffairs, 2016).

Here's the ground we cover it today's interview:

  • The David Sax origin story. (00:36 - 01:18)
  • The story behind the book. How did you discover the surprising fact that analog is making a comeback? (01:19 - 05:08)
  • The revenge of vinyl. (05:09 - 10:59)
  • The revenge of paper. (11:00 - 13:00)
  • The revenge of board games. (13:01 - 19:21)
  • The revenge of print (books). (19:22 - 24:00)
  • The revenge of analog in digital. (24:01 -  27:42)
  • What did this project teach you about sabbath and rest?   (27:43 - 31:59)
  • What challenge or encouragement would you like to share with ever reader as they get to the last page of your book? (32:00 - 32:41)
  • For somebody looking to be a writer or a reporter, what are one or two core tools they’re going to want to be exposed to, to help them be more successful? (32:42 - 33:34)
  • Any daily routines or habits that have been a key part of your ongoing success? (33:35 - 36:54)
  • Where can listeners connect with you on the web and find out more about The Revenge of Analog? (36:55 - 37:26)

About the Book:  A funny thing happened on the way to the digital utopia. We've begun to fall back in love with the very analog goods and ideas the tech gurus insisted that we no longer needed. Businesses that once looked outdated, from film photography to brick-and-mortar retail, are now springing with new life. Notebooks, records, and stationery have become cool again. Behold the Revenge of Analog.

David Sax has uncovered story after story of entrepreneurs, small business owners, and even big corporations who've found a market selling not apps or virtual solutions but real, tangible things. As e-books are supposedly remaking reading, independent bookstores have sprouted up across the country. As music allegedly migrates to the cloud, vinyl record sales have grown more than ten times over the past decade. Even the offices of tech giants like Google and Facebook increasingly rely on pen and paper to drive their brightest ideas.

Sax's work reveals a deep truth about how humans shop, interact, and even think. Blending psychology and observant wit with first-rate reportage, Sax shows the limited appeal of the purely digital life-and the robust future of the real world outside it.

About the Author: David Sax is a writer and reporter who specializes in business and culture. His work appears regularly in Bloomberg Businessweek, the New Yorker's Currency blog, and other publications. He is the author of Save the Deli, which won a James Beard Award for Writing and Literature, and The Tastemakers. He lives in Toronto.

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Scott Sauls is back on the show today to share about his book Jesus Outside the Lines: A Way Forward for Those Who Are Tired of Taking Sides (Tyndale House Publishers, 2015).

Here's the ground we cover in this episode:

  • The book opens with you stating, “I decided to write this book because I am tired. Tired of taking sides, that is.” Tell us about the season of your life that this book emerged from. What sorts of questions were you wrestling with at the time? (00:37 - 01:44)
  • Another thing you talk about in the introduction is “outrage porn.” Explain what that is and give us some examples of where we’ve all likely seen this on full display in our culture over the past 3-6 months? (01:45 - 06:48)
  • If I were to write a list of the top 5 sermon topics that will make your parishioners squirm, I’m guessing tithing would be near the top. In chapter four, you call out a study reported in Relevant magazine and share that if American Christians began to tithe regularly, global hunger, starvation, and death from preventable diseases could be relieved within five years. If this is truly the case, you’d think we’d be going for that with all we’re worth. Talk to us about wealth, greed, contentedness, and generosity, why do Christians struggle so much in these areas? (06:49 - 12:36)
  • While sexuality has always been a hot button issue for the church, the questions that people are asking today are far different than they were even 5-10 years ago. In chapter eight, you say that God is both in favor of chastity and in favor of sexual freedom. Take a few minutes to help us build a biblical grid for how we can process and lovingly respond to the questions our family, friends and neighbors are asking about this topic? (12:37 - 18:48)
  • I think one of the most humbling challenges of preparing a sermon or a writing a book is that we’re always in essence preaching to ourselves. Was there any particular part of Jesus Outside the Lines that was especially challenging for you to write? (18:49 - 20:30)
  • Jesus Outside the Lines is nearing its two year anniversary, so you’ve had a lot of time for readers to share feedback with you. Are there any common themes or questions that have  come back to you? Anything that surprised you? (20:31 - 22:19)
  • If Jesus Outside the Lines were releasing for the very first time in 2017, is there anything you would add or say differently? (22:20 -23:40)
  • Scott, if you could have a 5 minute conversation with every reader who finishes Jesus Outside the Lines, how would you challenge or encourage them? (23:41 - 24:58)
  • Are there any morning or evening that you’ve found to make you more productive with your writing and help you both start and end your day well? (24:59 - 28:48)
  • What about getting into a groove or flow state for your writing? What does that look like for you? (28:49 - 30:00)
  • Any tools or apps that are an indispensible part of your writing process? (30:01 - 30:42)
  • Where can people go on the web to learn more about you and your books? (30:43 - 31:06)

About the Book:  Whether the issue of the day on Twitter, Facebook, or cable news is our sexuality, political divides, or the perceived conflict between faith and science, today's media pushes each one of us into a frustrating clash between two opposing sides. Polarizing, us-against-them discussions divide us and distract us from thinking clearly and communicating lovingly with others. Scott Sauls, like many of us, is weary of the bickering and is seeking a way of truth and beauty through the conflicts. Jesus Outside the Lines presents Jesus as this way. Scott shows us how the words and actions of Jesus reveal a response that does not perpetuate the destructive fray. Jesus offers us a way forward - away from harshness, caricatures and stereotypes. In Jesus Outside the Lines, you will experience a fresh perspective of Jesus, who will not (and should not) fit into the sides.

About the Author:  In March 2012, Scott began serving as the Senior Minister of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee, where he lives with his wife Patti and two daughters, Abby and Ellie. Previously, Scott was a lead and preaching pastor for Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, where he worked alongside Dr. Timothy Keller. He has also planted churches in Kansas City and St. Louis, and is a frequent speaker at conferences, leadership retreats, and to university students.

Formative experiences have included being an athlete, living in a global city, and suffering through a season of anxiety and depression. Influential voices in Scott’s life include Tim Keller, CS Lewis, Leslie Newbigin, Soong Chan Rah, Jonathan Edwards, Johnny Cash, Joni Eareckson Tada, Miroslav Volf, Paul Tripp, Ann Voskamp, Martin Luther King, Jr., Marva Dawn, and NT Wright. In his free time you might find Scott relaxing with people or a book, strumming his Gibson J-45, hiking, eating Edley’s BBQ, enjoying live music, or cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals and North Carolina Tar Heels.

Scott has authored two books: Jesus Outside the Lines and Befriend.

About the Book:  For many people, Christianity has become an institution of rules, duty, and potlucks. But for filmmaker Darren Wilson, his life of cultural Christianity changed radically when a powerful encounter with God led him to begin making films that attempted to display the God of the Bible in living color. What happened over the next ten years has affected millions around the world, and has set fires ablaze in hearts that have long sat dormant.

God Adventures is an honest and compelling book about the events surrounding the making of these powerful films (Finger of God, Furious Love, Father of Lights, Holy Ghost, and Holy Ghost Reborn), and is designed to take you into a deeper, more fulfilling and, yes, riskier relationship with God.

Like Darren’s films, this book focuses on:

  • God’s miraculous power and overpowering love.
  • A Father desperately pursuing His children.
  • The often misunderstood third Person of the Trinity and His relationship to the modern believer.
  • God’s dominance over other gods and supernatural powers.
  • How the Holy Spirit wants to use everyone to bring change and healing to the world, not just professional ministers.

Christianity was never meant to be a social club—it was meant to change the world. God Adventures provides biblical insight for the supernatural occurrences documented in Darren’s films, along with behind-the-scenes stories that will inspire, engage, and challenge you to not settle for less than experiencing all of God.

About the Author:  Darren Wilson is the Founder of Wanderlust Productions, a film/television production company that focuses on creating media that creatively and powerfully advances the kingdom of God around the world. Darren’s films have been seen by millions around the world. His first five films, Finger of God, Furious Love, Father of Lights, Holy Ghost, and Holy Ghost Reborn have helped change the spiritual temperature of the worldwide church. He is currently working on a new film and a variety of television shows. Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Michael Williams returns to the show today to share about the Basics of Ancient Ugaritic Video Lectures: A Complete Course for the Beginner (Zondervan Academic, 2016).

Here’s what you’ll learn in today’s interview:

  • Michael shares a bit of his backstory and gives an update on what kept him busy in 2016 (00:41 - 03:32)
  • How Michael first got interested in studying Ugaritic (03:33 - 06:54)
  • Examples of how studying Ugaritic informs our reading of certain Old Testament texts (06:55 - 12:57)
  • Challenges Michael saw with other Ugaritic grammars and how his grammar addresses those gaps (12:58 - 19:18)
  • How preparing for the video lecture series compared to preparing to share this same material in a traditional classroom setting (19:19 - 21:58)
  • Ways the video lectures allowed Michael to take students beyond what’s covered in the grammar (21:59 - 23:54)
  • How professors at Bible colleges, seminaries and graduate schools can best make use of this material (23:55 - 26:11)
  • Prerequisite studies you should consider before tackling Ugaritic (26:12 - 27:44)
  • Places to connect with Michael online and find out more about the Basics of Ancient Ugaritic grammar, DVD, and Bible Mesh course. (27:45 - 28:34)

About the DVD:  Basics of Ancient Ugaritic Video Lectures provides a 30-minute lesson to accompany each chapter in the Basics of Ancient Ugaritic teaching grammar. Ugaritic is an ancient language of Canaan, written in cuneiform on tablets of clay. Ugaritic is of vital importance for understanding the wider world and culture surrounding the Old Testament text. The grammar and video lectures begin with the alphabet, and each new lesson builds on the ones before. This approach is not, therefore, that of a synthetic Ugaritic grammar—those types of texts often prove to be overwhelming for students.

Instead, Basics of Ancient Ugaritic Video Lectures can readily be used for learning the language by individuals on their own or in a classroom setting. Each chapter in the accompanying grammar concludes with a set of exercises allowing students to know whether they are grasping the fundamentals of the language.

In short, Basics of Ancient Ugaritic Video Lectures, along with the accompanying grammar, represents an ideal first step for entering the larger world of Semitic languages.

About the Author:  Michael Williams (PhD, University of Pennsylvania) is Johanna K. and Martin J. He is the author of Deception in Genesis, The Prophet and His Message, Basics of Ancient Ugaritic, The Biblical Hebrew Companion for Bible Software Users, and How to Read the Bible through the Jesus Lens, and editor and contributor of Mishneh Todah. His passion is to equip students with knowledge of the Old Testament and its languages so that they may grow in their comprehension and appreciation of redemptive history and be adequately prepared to promote and defend the faith through word and action. Michael resides in Grand Rapids, MI, with his wife, Dawn.

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today I speak with Erin Weidemann about her faith journey, surviving cancer, and the road to becoming a children’s author.

Here’s what you’ll learn in today’s interview:

  • Erin’s backstory and faith journey (00:45 - 03:31)
  • How a children’s birthday party helped the Bible Belles series first begin to take shape (03:32 - 05:57)
  • Meet Rooney Cruz, one of the central characters in the Bible Belles series. (05:58 - 08:56)
  • Meet Mari, Rooney’s special companion on her Bible Belles adventures (08:57 - 10:05)
  • Why did you select Hannah, Esther, and Abigail for the first three books in the Bible Belles series and what do you hope to teach girls through each of them? (10:06 - 12:43)
  • What is significant about the special gift that Mari gives Rooney at the end of each story? (12:44 - 15:00)
  • A sneak peek at the “Heroes for Her” that we’ll be meeting in books four and five of the Bible Belles series (15:01 - 18:12)
  • What would you like to see every girl take away from your stories? (18:13 - 19:53)
  • How can parents, grandparents, and teachers put Bible Belles to use? (19:54 - 21:22)
  • Where to go online to connect with Erin and lean more about the Bible Belles series. (21:23 - 21:55)

About the Bible Belles series:  After tossing around some ideas for what to get our niece Hannah for her birthday, we decided we didn’t want to buy her just another toy. It had to be something meaningful, something special. We simplified the story of Hannah from the Bible and made her a personalized book, so she could know about a great hero whose name she shares. I wrote the story, and Brent illustrated the cover. When we gave her the book, she smiled, shrugged, and said, “I didn’t even know there was a Hannah in the Bible.”

Then, a light went off. Wouldn’t it be great if girls today were just as excited about biblical women as they are about princesses: real examples of true beauty, women who can be real heroes for girls today? That would be something. That would be everything.

And, just like that, Bible Belles was born.

Putting The "Her" In Hero

An engaging, high-quality Christian book series for kids, “The Adventures of Rooney Cruz” is a series unlike any other. Rooted in truth and the firm foundation of God’s word, “The Adventures of Rooney Cruz” takes girls on a journey to discover true beauty, God’s love, and their unique purpose.

Virtues From The Bible

Prayer, Patience, Bravery, Loyalty and Leadership. From the moment you found out you were going to be a girl mom, you’ve thought about your daughter’s heart and that you’re charged with teaching her what she needs to know. We’re here to give you the tools you need to talk to your girl about what’s beautiful according to God. After all, His is the ultimate measure of beauty. These books focus on cultivating a beautiful heart and nurturing the qualities that make a truly beautiful woman, empowering girls to stop mimicking the world’s definition of beauty and instead, make a different kind of noise.

A Frame Character Children Connect With

Rooney Cruz is a modern day 9 year old girl who gets a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet the Bible Belles and discover the hero inside herself. While most children’s bible stories are a summary of events, Rooney Cruz offers readers a way to really connect with the female Bible heroes. In each book, Rooney faces a real world problem and learns how to use her God-given superpowers to address it. Rooney teaches today’s girls how to wield the powers of Prayer, Patience, Bravery, Loyalty and Leadership in their own lives, too.

A Chance For Moms To Pour In

For the first time, you get the chance to discuss your faith with your kids in context, in a way that makes sense for them. These books were designed to spark an honest conversation between moms and daughters about how God measures beauty, as well as their purpose in this world. Since our frame character is unfamiliar with the biblical world, she’s prone to asking questions–a lot of questions–which gives you the perfect opportunity to teach your girl about what she’s reading and how your own experiences and lessons have shaped you.

Positive Role Models For Girls

Girls need role models. They need real heroes who reinforce the right values and virtues. These days, there’s no shortage of women who are successful in their chosen field (which we think is AWESOME, by the way), and a lot of the time the ones who are loudest are the ones who get noticed. But where are the real heroes: women who pray, women with a heart to serve, women who lead with their values? They’re out there, but their stories have been drowned out by the overwhelming narrative of the world. Well, not anymore. It’s time for the sound of the Belles to be HEARD.

Quality To Keep Her Attention

We understand that most Christian products these days are, well, lame. We get why it’s easy to opt out of most Christian books. We didn’t want to make another series that kids would want to pass up for something better. We wanted to give girls the kind of experience they would cherish, now and forever. We chose a larger size and thick glossy pages. We even hired a former Disney Animator for crying out loud! We are dedicated to helping girls connect with these stories, and high quality is one of the ways we accomplish that.

About the Author: Erin Weidemann is a teacher turned professional author. A former college athlete, Erin is also a five-time cancer survivor. She lives in Encinitas, California with her husband Brent and their daughter Rooney. In addition to being the co-founder and CEO of Bible Belles, Erin is the host of the Heroes For Her podcast.

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today I speak with Terence Chatmon about his new book Do Your Children Believe?: Becoming Intentional About Your Family's Faith and Spiritual Legacy (Thomas Nelson, 2017).

Here’s what you’ll learn in today’s interview:

  • The Terence Chatmon origin story (00:42 - 02:13)
  • The story behind Do Your Children Believe? (02:14 - 06:35)
  • Why do men struggle to take ownership of the spiritual leadership in their homes?(06:36 - 11:22)
  • 10,000 foot fly over of what it looks like to create a family spiritual development plan (11:23 - 16:37)
  • Are there any potential difficulties or challenges we need to be aware of as we're beginning this planning process? (16:38 - 24:38)
  • How does a family begin living out their plan and keep it front and center in their life?(24:39 - 30:45)
  • What does it look like to set realistic goals in relation to the life stage you're in and how can we establish a work, play, worship, family sort of life balance? (31:52 - 43:16)
  • How will becoming a stronger spiritual leader at home impact our marriage? (43:17 - 46:20)
  • What do you hope every reader takes away from the book? (46:21 - 49:55)
  • Quick introduction to the work of Fellowship of Companies for Christ International (49:56 - 52:56)

About the Book:
Are your children ready to live out their faith in the real world?

Most parents who value Christian faith want their children to enjoy a vibrant, growing relationship with God, both now and throughout their lives. But few of those parents ever attach this hope to an ongoing plan; therefore, they fail to lay a reliable spiritual track in front of the fast-moving train of family life. This book is a junction point where deep parental desire meets workable design and where timid inadequacy meets Christ’s sufficiency. It’s where individual families become multiplication factories, exerting a lasting impact not only on their coming generations but even on the culture at large.

The death of Joshua and his contemporaries was barely old news in Israel before the people of God experienced a Judges 2:10 moment: “There arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done” (ESV). One generation is all it takes. One generation who stops remembering. One generation who stops creating. One generation blinded to God’s real work in their lives who then subtly quiets the expectation of His new work in succeeding generations.

Do Your Children Believe? appears at a time in history when another Judges 2:10 moment doesn’t sound so incredibly far-fetched—a day when many people’s only real knowledge of God comes from what they’ve heard and read about, not what they’ve actually seen and experienced, and when His work is more about the dutiful following of rules than the daily adventure of walking with Him as Lord.

Imagine, instead, a generation of your family who knows God with intimate familiarity. Who doesn’t just pretend at faith but actually lives it. Kids who can tell you what they believe and why it matters. Teenagers who handle adversity with the resilient joy of godly wisdom. A family who prays together and worships together, growing into young adults who are equipped and inspired to keep this torch ablaze from the moment their own new families begin.

This book is here to make that reality happen, written by an author equipped with not only a passion for the concept but also a proven plan for success—a wealth of first-hand personal stories from his wife and kids for how they’ve put this plan into living action with remarkable blessings in tow. When God puts His power behind families who embrace this kingdom call, on-the-ground change will result in off-the-charts revival.

About the Author:  Terence Chatmon, a successful senior executive in corporate America, served in leadership roles with several Fortune 50 companies, including Johnson & Johnson, Citibank, and Coca-Cola, but he was failing to become the spiritual leader of his home. He was challenged by his wife to chart a course for the spiritual growth of his family and children. After much prayer, he took what he knew from his corporate-world success and biblical teaching to develop one of the world’s most transformational step-by-step family spiritual development process.

Terence is now a family legacy champion, and his family discipleship workshop, Charting Your Family’s Spiritual Course, has reached more than twenty thousand participating families and continues to grow. He is the president and CEO of Fellowship of Companies for Christ International (FCCI.org), a network of executive leaders spanning more than one hundred countries. FCCI uses training conferences, personal relationships, and a rich library of resources to equip and encourage business leaders to see their companies and careers as powerful tools for transformational change.

A Chicago native and graduate of the University of Illinois, Terence brings drive and ingenuity to every role he plays in life, as an elder at a prominent eight-thousand-member mega-church, a Bible study teacher, and most importantly a husband and father.

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today I speak with Lorraine Marie Varela about her book Love in the Face of ISIS: Seven Prayer Strategies for the Crisis in the Middle East (Chosen Books, 2016).

Here’s what you’ll learn in today’s interview:

  • Different outlets Lorraine has developed for expressing her creativity. (00:42 - 01:42)
  • Overlap and parallels in finding a creative flow state in two diverse areas of creative expression (photography & writing). (01:43 - 04:11)
  • Love in the Face of ISIS seems like a sharp left turn from Powerful Moments in the Presence of God. How’d you get started on the path of writing a book about prayer and ISIS? (04:12 - 07:02)
  • Can prayer actually make a difference in these global crisis situations where we feel helpless and out of control? (07:03 - 09:43)
  • How did you discover the 7 targeted prayer strategies to release over ISIS and the Middle East? (09:44 - 11:19)
  • Lorraine shares one of the seven targeted prayers from the book. (11:20 - 12:48)
  • How have readers incorporated these prayers into their daily lives after reading the book? (12:49 - 14:04)
  • You and your husband Gabriel traveled to the Middle East, to meet with Christian refugees who had fled Iraq after ISIS took power. What surprised you the most during your time with them? What are their greatest fears? What are their greatest needs? (15:09 - 19:24)
  • Can you share one of the stories from the book where God intervened supernaturally into a situation? (19:25 - 22:08)
  • As you look back to the time when you began working on this book and fast forward all the way to our conversation today, the number of horrors and atrocities we’ve seen all over the world are almost too numerous to count. Is there anything you would say differently or add to the dialog you have with your readers via the book? (22:09 - 24:19)
  • As you think of readers getting to the last page of your book, how do you hope Love in the Face of ISIS has impacted them? (24:20 - 25:59)
  • Where can listeners connect with you and find out more about your books on the web? (26:00 - 26:20)

About the Book:  In less than a year's time, ISIS grew into a terrifying reality in the Middle East.

Thousands have been persecuted and martyred by this network of Islamic terrorists, and their numbers are increasing. It seems impossible to turn to the news without hearing of new atrocities committed by this violent organization. As ISIS continues to gain momentum and advance its territory, many Christians find themselves feeling powerless and afraid.

What can be done in the face of such evil?

In this timely, compelling book, Lorraine Marie Varela exposes the spirit behind ISIS and provides seven specific prayer strategies to effect real change in the Middle East.

Through true-life stories of supernatural intervention, you'll see how God is already at work in the midst of the violence in the Middle East--and you'll learn how to join His work through powerful, effective prayer.

Don't be afraid.

Partner with the purposes of God--and declare to ISIS that Love is coming after them.

About the Author:  Lorraine Marie Varela is the author of Powerful Moments in the Presence of God and a professional photographer. She has traveled to the Middle East and lives near Seattle, where she and her husband help lead a Foursquare Messianic congregation. Lorraine and her husband, Gabriel, have two grown daughters.

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today I speak with Esther Emery about her recent book What Falls from the Sky: How I Disconnected from the Internet and Reconnected with the God Who Made the Clouds (Zondervan, 2016).

Here’s what you’ll learn in today’s interview:

  • The Esther Emery origin story. (01:25 - 02:48)
  • How a phone call led to an impulse idea to spend a year off the internet and write a book about the experience. (02:49 - 05:06)
  • Identity crisis and withdrawal symptoms that quickly emerged after disconnecting from the web. (05:07 - 07:56)
  • New experiences and routines that began to fill in the gaps that were previously consumed by time online?(07:57 - 10:07)
  • Shifts in Esther’s marriage during this season. (10:08 - 13:16)
  • Changes in motherhood and parenting. (13:17 - 15:09)
  • Rediscovering God and a “surprise” missions trip to Nicaragua.  (15:10 - 18:24)
  • The importance of seasons in the year-long journey without internet. (18:25 - 20:37)
  • What Esther would like to see every reader do after finishing the book. (20:38 - 22:22)
  • Esther is back on the web these days, but she’ll never go back to how she was before. (22:23 - 24:31)
  • Moving from Boston back to Idaho and how her family ended up living in a yurt. (24:32 - 26:03)
  • Unique challenges and surprises living off the grid in a yurt. (26:04 - 28:29)
  • What has it been like to essentially live out your mother’s dream and vision for the back to the land movement? (28:30 - 31:00)
  • Where to connect with Esther and find her book online. (31:01 - 31:42)

About the Book:  Esther Emery was a successful playwright and theater director, wife and mother, and loving it all - until, suddenly, she wasn’t. When a personal and professional crisis of spectacular extent leaves her reeling, Esther is left empty, alone in her marriage, and grasping for identity that does not define itself by busyness and a breakneck pace of life. Something had to be done.

What Falls from the Sky is Esther’s fiercely honest, piercingly poetic account of a year without Internet - 365 days away from the good, the bad, and the ugly of our digital lives - in one woman’s desperate attempt at a reset. Esther faces her addiction to electronica, her illusion of self-importance, and her longing to return to simpler days, but then the unexpected happens. Her experiment in analog is hijacked by a spiritual awakening, and Esther finds herself suddenly, inexplicably drawn to the faith she had rejected for so long.

Ultimately, Esther’s unplugged pilgrimage brings her to a place where she finally finds the peace - and the God who created it - she has been searching for all along.

What Falls from the Sky offers a path for you to do the same. For all the ways the Internet makes you feel enriched and depleted, genuinely connected and wildly insufficient, What Falls from the Sky reveals a new way to look up from your screens and live with palms wide open in a world brimming with the good gifts of God.

About the Author:  Esther Emery used to direct stage plays in Southern California. But that was a long time ago. Now she lives with her husband and three children off the grid in a yurt, tending to three acres in the foothills of Idaho’s Rocky Mountains. She writes about faith and trying to live a fearless, free life at www.estheremery.com.
