The Shaun Tabatt Show is an interview-based program offering discussion on a variety of topics including books, music, film, and more.

Aug 3, 2015

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today my special guest is Gary M. Burge and we’ll be talking about his book A Week in the Life of a Roman Centurion (IVP Academic, 2015).

About The Book:
Enter a world of warfare and treachery, of duty and honor, of love and loyalty, interwoven with the inner workings of a Roman centurion's household. And then trace it as the road curves toward little Capernaum.

Follow the story of Appius, a proud centurion, and Tullus, his scribe and slave. From a battle with the Parthians, through a tragic personal crisis, to the gladiator arena at Caesarea Maritima, their tale finally leads to the backwater village of Capernaum on the shores of Galilee. There, in a culture not their own and during a week they will never forget, they encounter a Jewish prophet from Nazareth.

A Week in the Life of a Roman Centurion gives us a first-century view of the world of the Gospels. In entertaining historical fiction, splashed with informative sidebars and images, we capture a view of Jesus' world from the outer framework looking in.

About The Author:
Gary M. Burge (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. His passion in teaching, research and writing is how the unique world of the Middle East in antiquity shapes how we read the New Testament today. Among his many published books are Theology Questions Everyone Asks (with coeditor David Lauber), The Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary (general editor with Andrew Hill), The New Testament in Antiquity (coauthored with Lynn Cohick and Gene Green), John: The Gospel of Life and the award-winning Whose Land? Whose Promise? What Christians Are Not Being Told About Israel and the Palestinians.

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today my special guest is Israel Wayne and we’ll be talking about his book Questions Jesus Asks: Where Divinity Meets Humanity (New Leaf Press, 2015).

About The Book:

Jesus rarely answered questions He was asked, but instead turned the tables by asking a piercing question of His own. Questions Jesus Asks goes through a broad spectrum of these, dealing with issues like morality, suffering, humility, faith, and much more.

  • Explore the unique paradox of Jesus’ divinity and humanity
  • Be challenged by the questions Jesus asks each of us
  • Learn more about Jesus and find the answers to your own life’s questions.

John 17:3 tells us: “And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” There is no higher purpose in life than the knowledge of God through His Son. Prepare to learn far more about God and the nature of Jesus than you thought was possible. Jesus asks penetrating questions that cut passed the pretense and reach the target of our hearts.

About The Author:

Israel Wayne is an author and conference speaker who has a passion for defending the Christian faith and promoting a Biblical worldview. The author of Homeschooling from a Biblical Worldview and Full-Time Parenting: A Guide to Family-Based Discipleship, Israel is the Director of Family Renewal, and site editor for ChristianWorldview.net. He is a homeschooled graduate, father of eight and author of the previous title, Questions God Asks, which was released in the Spring of 2014 by New Leaf Press.

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today my special guest is Daniel R. Hyde and we’ll be talking about his book A Well-Ordered Church: Laying a Foundation for a Vibrant Church (EP Books, 2015).

About The Book:
"Jesus is my personal Lord and Savior."

No phrase captures better the ethos of modern evangelical Christianity. And while this is absolutely necessary for a Christian to believe and profess, what typically gets lost in much evangelical thinking and acting is Jesus’ church. This book seeks to present to evangelical Christians the basics of ecclesiology, or, the biblical doctrine of the church. The authors say in these pages, “This is a church, in the most basic and fundamental of ways. No matter what view of church government you may hold, the goal is to draw you back to the big principles of Scripture to help you understand the church s identity, authority, ecumenicity, and activity.”

About The Author:
Rev. Daniel R. Hyde--"Pastor Danny" to the members of Oceanside United Reformed Church--has an eclectic past: he was baptized Roman Catholic, was converted in a Foursquare church, attended an Assemblies of God college where he flirted spiritually with Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism before he discovered the riches of the historic Protestant and Reformed Christian faith. All of this prepared him to minister in the diverse religious culture of Southern California. In 2000, while still in seminary, Danny planted the Oceanside United Reformed Church (United Reformed Churches in North America) in Carlsbad/Oceanside, California. Fifteen years on later he continues as pastor and is married with four children. He and his wife enjoy showing hospitality in their home for meals, prayer, and to study the Word.

Pastor Danny has a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Vanguard University, Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Westminster Seminary California, and a Master of Theology (Th.M.) from Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. His Th.M. thesis was entitled, "Of Great Importance and of High Concernment: The Liturgical Theology of John Owen (1616-1683)," and was read by Drs. Joel Beeke, Derek W. H. Thomas, and Mark Jones. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today my special guest is Jeremy Walker and we’ll be talking about his book Passing Through: Pilgrim Life in the Wilderness.

About The Book:
As twenty-first-century Christians, we must relate to the world, but the question is, how do we relate to it? Some Christians are scared, others are simply bewildered, and still, others capitulate to the spirit of the age. In Passing Through: Pilgrim Life in the Wilderness, Pastor Jeremy Walker presents the biblical perspective that Christians are pilgrims passing through this fallen world who must cultivate the spirit of holy separation alongside holy engagement as they serve Christ in all their interactions. Unless we embrace this identity, we will lose our way. Reminding us that we need “the Word of God as our map and the Spirit of Christ as our compass,” Pastor Walker clearly presents principles for holy engagement with the world and separation from it for pilgrims on their way home, seeking to glorify the God of their salvation every step of the way.

About the Author:
Jeremy Walker is a pastor of Maidenbower Baptist Church in Crawley, England, author of Life in Christ and The Brokenhearted Evangelist, coauthor of A Portrait of Paul: Identifying a True Minister of Christ.

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today my special guest is filmmaker Darren Wilson and we'll be discussing his new film The Greatest Fight, which tells the story of UFC fighting legend Ken Shamrock.

About The Film:
He’s a founding father of the UFC. He was a superstar in the WWF. But for Ken Shamrock, the end of his fighting career is imminent. Filmmaker Darren Wilson was allowed unprecedented access into Ken’s world as he fought what were thought to be his final three fights, but along the way, a larger story emerged—one where a man’s total identity is being changed. Raw, honest, and unpredictable, this film six years in the making captures the passion, desire and ultimate hope of one of the most misunderstood fighters of all time.

To watch the film, visit TheGreatestFight.com.

About The Filmmaker:
Darren founded Wanderlust Productions in 2006 when he started stumbling through his first feature film, Finger of God. Later, he decided to surround himself with people who were more talented than him to help create his next features, Furious Love and Father of Lights, but of course, he takes all the credit for their great work. Since then, Darren has created The Greatest Fight, with UFC/WWF superstar Ken Shamrock, and the two films Holy Ghost (2014) & Holy Ghost: Reborn (2015). Darren’s job description includes creating the stories, speaking and showing off the films, doing lots of interviews, planning all the shoots, and schmoozing with awesome people around the world. Charisma Magazine recently named him one of the “21 Emerging Leaders of Tomorrow’s Church”, and DeVon Franklin, VP of Production at Columbia Pictures calls him “one of the most innovative filmmakers and authors of faith today.” He has a wonderful and long-suffering wife, Jenell, and three wonderful children, Serenity, Stryder, and River. He also has two cats (meh) and the best dogs in the world, Moses and Maui.

Welcome to the Shaun Tabatt Show! Today my guests are Jesse Fryson and Zach MacGorman from Above the Fall and we’ll be discussing their debut EP Rise and Fall.

About The Band:
Above The Fall originated in the fall of 2011 when founding members, Jesse Fryson, and Zach MacGorman started writing music together. Over the course of the next few years, they had gone on to play shows in NJ, NY, PA, and DE, including a youth conference, with national recording artists, City Harbor, and headlining a benefit concert, which helped to raise upwards of $10,000 for a local pastor’s wife and mother of two young kids, who suffered a rare and nearly fatal stroke.

In May of 2014, Above The Fall had been invited to attend the Extreme Tour Objective Sessions in Nashville TN, where they met multi-Grammy and Dove nominated Producer, Billy Smiley. They were asked by Smiley to come to his studio to play some of their music for him, and to discuss the band’s future goals. Five months, two trips, and six songs later, Above The Fall put the finishing touches on their debut E.P. The band has entered into a management agreement with Smiley and a team of industry professionals to help them move forward in their career.

Now, with new music, new members, and a new live show, Above The Fall is set to make their official debut by Spring of 2015. From infusing rap into their songs to the guitar solos, from the drum battles to impromptu jam sessions, their unique live shows have set them apart from the rest. Some of their musical influences include Switchfoot, Foo Fighters, Tenth Avenue North, Jars Of Clay, and Shinedown. Above The Fall is ready to take their music to the next level.

Welcome to the Shaun Tabatt Show! Today my guest is William Boekestein and we’ll be talking about his book Ulrich Zwingli from EP Books’ Bitesize Biographies series.

About the Book:

“Ulrich Zwingli of Zurich, a great reformer overshadowed by two greater, Luther and Calvin, should be much better known than he is. This well-informed and workmanlike book will surely make him so.”

With warmth and pastoral appreciation, he demonstrates the intense practical implications of grappling with the issues that Zwingli faced, and how Christians can gain perspective for life and ministry in the church today.”
-Douglas Bond
